So, we have had Savannah this past summer and fall at the Callier Center for speech therapy. The set up is 4 days a week 2.5 hrs. 12 kids, 12 therapist. Well, they are grad students. However they are overseen by about 3 or 4 speech therapist. The entire program is part of UTD, Speech Pathology. In the summer we saw a big jump in communication. However, we also had just gotten the hearing aids for Savannah and we had never done anything like this. In the Fall, we didn't see as big of a change. This could be normal. However, one thing we run into is that a number of the 12 students(all boys except Savannah) are not very verbal, and some not very social. Some are autistic as well. Some you really can tell, some you think their mom's are just crazy. However, I firmly believe moms know their kids best, and I won't question that anymore. But there is little socialization going on due to all of that. We see Savannah seeking out attention at home, and even interacting with kids in Sunday school. She occasionally will give Glenn(her cousin) the time of day, but she is just playing hard to get with him:) Also, when it is too noisy, or too much ciaos, she shuts down. This is mainly due(most likely) to having hearing aids. They are not an aid like 'glasses'. So what I mean is that even thought it amplifies the hearing, it doesn't process out the 'noise' like we are able to. So when that happens at Callier...done. She shuts down.
So, we found this school, http://www.hearingschoolsw.com/. It is SMALL. It is OLD(building). But it is a 2 teacher to 1 student ratio. Savannah will be the 4th student in the class. All of the kids have some type of hearing aid. All of the other kids only handicap is their hearing. That makes Savannah unique as she has some other challenges she brings. That being said, we think it is still a great choice for her. I have been talking to the teacher and director, Savannah's speech therapist, and her Speech teacher from LISD all weekend. We all think this is going to be a good change for her.
It is closer! It is 1 day less a week(m, w, f 9:30-12:30) and she will have peer models around her that are speaking on different levels and socializing. But for some reason everything will cost us more. Weird how that works out! However, we still think it is the right move for her. We will have to continue speech therapy outside of it, as a requirement for the school. And I am paranoid of changes, so I of course want to do more speech then we have been doing.
But in the end, I pray(We pray) this is the right thing.
So why did I make you read this...
Pray for Savannah to blossom in this environment.
Pray for her to be able to communicate any and every need or want or emotion, so that we all know!
Please pray, if you are ever wondering what to pray for us, pray that we have peace in the choices we are making. I thought choosing a school for my other kids was stressful. That was small potatoes.:)
So, pray for peace in our decisions.
Pray for us to have our eyes open so we can see the progress or see that another change is needed.
Thank you!!!!!
